As part of the California Domestic Workers Coalition, Hand in Hand is working to create a portable benefits program so that domestic workers can access the paid sick days they are entitled to, but rarely receive.

Over 10,000 domestic workers work in San Francisco. San Francisco domestic workers have the right to earn paid sick time, but in practice it is not accessible for workers who do not work enough hours in one job or who work for multiple employers.  With very low wages, domestic workers struggle to care for themselves and their families.  The median annual income among San Francisco domestic workers is only $19,000.  60% do not earn enough to meet their living expenses. And between 2005 and 2018, an estimated 50% experienced wage theft.

A portable benefits system for paid time off would ensure domestic workers can access the benefits they deserve.
