Right now, NYC and much of the East Coast are being blanketed by smoke from wildfires currently raging in Canada. This is creating unhealthy air quality — of particular concern for children, older adults, and those with respiratory issues and disabilities. Whether you employ a nanny, home care worker, caregiver, or housecleaner, you can help keep the worker in your home safe!

If you haven't already, here are some of our recommendations for what to do when the AQI is unhealthy, to help reduce exposure:

• Provide an N95 mask with 2 straps if the air quality is bad and work is to be conducted in a space that isn't purified.
• Adjust work schedules and reduce work hours.
• Provide more rest periods in spaces with filtered air, like a car or indoor environment.
• Use portable HEPA air filters to reduce the amount of particles inside the home.

You can find this and more disaster preparedness tips in our Disaster Preparedness for Domestic Employers guide on our Employer Resources page — link in the comments below. 👇

[Video description: A large multiracial and multiethnic group of disability advocates and allies of various ages and genders. Some standing, some in power wheelchairs. All outside in the grass, standing beneath trees, holding large signs. Video header reads: Chant with us this Disability Pride Month. Beautiful! Thank you!
