The work of caring for each other is the most important labor in our society. That has always been true, but the coronavirus has made clear just how fundamental care work is to our lives and our communities. In fact, in this moment, we’ve all come to see that care work is a matter of life and death. With or without a pandemic, every day of every year, care workers are underpaid and underappreciated.
Care work is essential work. It also happens to be climate work.
Every time disaster strikes, care workers are on the frontlines, saving lives.. Care jobs are green jobs – and we need more of them.
We are the people who are most likely to die from this virus, as well as from economic crises, and climate crises. And we are the people who rise to provide care and save lives. We call ourselves New York Caring Majority because all of us, in some way, are connected by care and caregiving. And we’re fed up with this broken system. So many thousands of people are dying, afraid and alone, because politicians and CEOs continue to choose their profit over our care.
We are building a movement to ensure that the Caring Majority is at the center of local, state, and federal response to the coronavirus pandemic. We know that the care sector and care work can be the answers to re-starting our economy in a way that protects and supports ALL of US. With an ambitious and feminist approach, we can strengthen our society’s resilience in the face of both climate change and pandemic. Together, we will create good jobs and ensure dignity for all our loved ones. On the other side of COVID-19, we will create a world in which all of us have the care and support we need to live full, healthy lives in our communities. In our vision, the work of providing care will be a respected and recognized contribution to our communities and our society. It will be a dignified and well paid job within a fast-growing and flourishing sector of a sustainable, humane economy. An economy based on caring for the Earth and one another.
In our vision, all of us are essential. Nobody is disposable.

About The New York Caring Majority
We are elders, people with disabilities, family caregivers, home care workers, and domestic workers from all across New York State. We are organizing to defend Medicaid and provide aid and support between neighbors in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis. As we organize to meet immediate and emerging needs, we are also pushing for the long-term systemic changes for the caring economy all need in order to thrive and live with dignity.
